Final deadline was July 21, 2008.

We will begin accepting submissions for AFI FEST 2009 next year.

If you have any questions please e-mail programming@afi.com

Q. What are the submission fees?
A. The fees are:

$55 Features - Over 30 minutes, in office June 13
$70 Features - Over 30 minutes, in office July 21
$35 Shorts - 30 minutes and under, in office June 13
$50 Shorts - 30 minutes and under, in office July 11

Q. When will I know if I am accepted to AFI FEST?
A. All filmmakers will be notified by October 3, 2008.

Q. Can I get an early answer if I'm considering multiple festivals? How important is premiere status?
A. Premiere status is taken into account for all sections, and films that have not yet screened in the US are given priority.

  • In order to be eligible for the International Feature Competition, the submission must be from a first- or second-time filmmaker and must be at least a US premiere.
  • Feature films (both narrative and documentary) that have previously screened for the public in Los Angeles or have been televised in the Los Angeles area are NOT eligible for consideration.
  • Short films that have previously screened for the public in Los Angeles are considered, but are not likely to be selected. Los Angeles premiere status is very important for short film selection.

Plan your festival strategy carefully. If you are considering offers from other festivals, please contact us and we will try our best to give you an early answer.

Q. Can you waive the submission fee for me?
A. We cannot waive the entry fee. We understand the limited budgets of many filmmakers, but AFI FEST is produced by a nonprofit organization and is only possible through our sponsors, ticket sales and entry fees. We receive thousands of requests to waive the fee and in fairness to all entrants, it is our policy never to do so.

Q. Can I submit a work in progress?
A. Yes, we frequently screen works in progress and are able to judge your film based on the merits of the story and subject. You will be competing against complete cuts, so provide the most finished product possible by the submission deadline.

Q. I mistakenly applied to your festival twice and I haven't yet mailed out the film copy. I also paid twice. Will I be disqualified?
A. You will NOT be disqualified. It happens all the time. We will contact you and process the refund for the second entry.

Q. Who do I contact with updates regarding the status of my film or other information?
A. Send e-mail to: Programming@AFI.com.
